ABOUT THE PLAY
Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working-class origins to the top of her game: defending, cross-examining and winning. She advocates the only way to exist in male dominated world of law is to play “the game” according to its rules. But an unexpected event forces her to confront the patriarchal power of the law, where the burden of proof and morality diverge. Tessa tells us through her story that the “male” laws, built centuries ago and still in practice have to change. The play asks and questions whether the judged is the defendant or the victim on the axis of sexual assault cases and gender roles.

ABOUT THE WRITER
The Australian writer Suzie Miller is a graduate of NIDA the Playwrights Studio at the Australian National Institute of Dramatic Arts (2000). Miller, who also has masters in theatre and in law, witnessed what the homeless and the victims of sexual assault go through directly as a successful lawyer, before she completely started writing plays in 2008. Having been a criminal defense lawyer in the humans rights sector, she regularly had to take the statements of people with horrible experiences. The stories she witnessed changed the way of her seeing the legal system. She started to question the legal gaps, the flaws in the system and started to find it hard to believe in the system. She was working as a lawyer in Sydney to subsidize writing, her first love. But she left her job after an offer from the National Theatre. Still working in Sydney Griffin Theatre, Miller’s play “Prima Facie” which is based on the themes of legal system, gender and justice, was premiered in 2018 worldwide and it has been debuted in Turkish by our team Eksi On Altı Kolektif, in Turkey.
